What is MATLAB?
Chandigarh, India: (Matrix Laboratories) MATLAB is an application or simply a piece of software for technical computing purposes and scientific computing. It is very sophisticated. MATLAB has a huge library with 1000’s of functions using which one can easily implement their algorithms and formulas. These functions when combined can be called as “Toolboxes”. MATLAB can also be called as a 4th generation programming language.
MATLAB has a user friendly interface; there is no need of compiling the program like other languages ex: java. It also has built-in algorithms like LAPACK and EISPACK.
MATLAB is used for solving mathematical differential equations, algebraic equations. It can give output in 2D and also in 3D formats.
MATLAB will run on all platforms including Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac etc..
What is a MATLAB System?
Generally the User Interface part is assumed as MATLAB, But if you include everything then you can call it as a MATLAB System. A MATLAB System consists of 5 divisions.
- The “Language” part,
- The “User interface” part where you can provide input and get the output.
- The “graphics system”, which is used for producing 2d and 3d graphics for your output.
- The “Function Library or the Toolbox”, which are a set of built-in functions for your easy workflow.
- The “API” for MATLAB, using which other programming languages like C, FORTRAN etc... are able to interact with MATLAB.
